The regional style of Chinese ancient architecture

Since ancient times, China has cast a vast geographic area with numerous nationalities. Different nations with different natural condition and terrain have already formed their own fold custom. Therefore, their architectures are also equipped with unique style which can be divided into 8 classifications:


1.       North style. It is concentrated in the vast flat area from north of Huai River to the south of Amur River with square and regular shape. The courtyard is usually very large in appropriate size; the construction shape will not raise and fall at a large extent and its body is low and flat with even roof curve; generally, its building material is brick and tile and its decoration tends to be simple. Its overall style is vast and broad.


2.       Northwest style. It is concentrated in the plateau section from the west of Yellow River to Gansu and Ningxia province. Its yard has a strong closure character with low house and low slope roof. Most of this kind of constructions are with flat roofs, adobe wall or loam walls in simple timber decoration. Its overall style is plain and unsophisticated. However, in the settlements of Hui Nationality, there are many mosques which are very high with steep roofs and magnificent decoration and color, looking significantly different form common civil architectures.



3.       Jiangnan (regions south of the Yangtze River) style. It is concentrated in the river network region. The architecture group is intensive with narrow courtyard. Its roof is with steep slope and titled corner. They are commonly in delicate and sophisticated decoration with lots of carving and colorful painting. The overall style is delicate and dexterous.


4.       Lingnan (south of the five ridges) style. It is concentrated in the hilly area of the Pearl River Basin. This kind of construction is very large with regular plane, small courtyard, narrow door and window. Generally, it is equipped with volcano wall. Besides, its roof slope is also very steep and the tilt extension of the roof corner is even larger. The overall style is light and refined.


5.       Southwest style. It is concentrated in the mountain area of southwest. The residents here normally make use of the hillside to build rooms whose under layer is an overhead stilt style construction. You may find that there are less architecture groups for their plane and appearance are relatively free. The structural components such as beam column are exposed to the outside, only with wooden partition or matting as the protective screen. It has soft roof curve with long protruding part. The deep and long eave, paved with wooden tilts or straw, is simply decorated. The overall style is free and flexible.


6.       Tibetan style. It is concentrated in the vast prairie mountain area of Tibetan settlements in Tibet, Qinghai, south of Gansu, north of Sichuan, etc. Herdsmen usually live in brown rectangular tent, while villagers live in blockhouse. There¡¯s black trapezoid window frame outside the window, and on the top of the eave, you will find decoration lines with a very expressive flavor. There are many Lama Temples which are all built on the highland in huge volume and strong color. They also use thick wall and flat roof with small quantity of roof top so as to highlight the key position. The overall style is solid and thick.


7.       Mongolian style. It is concentrated in the prairie area of Mongolian settlements. The herdsmen live in the Mongolian yurt. Diameter of the aristocratic yurt, which is elegantly decorated, can reach more than ten meters. Inside it, there¡¯s a column to support it. The Mongolian yurt, on the basis of the original type of Tibetan lama temple, has absorbed the artistic method form adjacent areas such as Hui Nationality and Han Nationality. The overall style is thick and magnificent.


8.       Uyghur Nationality style. It is concentrated in the residential area of Xinjiang Uygur. The exterior part of the construction is totally closed, and roofs are all flat. Inside the courtyard, you will find free plane layout with a lot of green plants, and a spacious corridor in front of the room. Besides, there¡¯s also colorful wooden carving and gypsum figure both inside and outside the house. The overall style is simple and plain outside and flexible and delicate inside.


China¡¯s vast national territorial area has created various architecture styles which are different from each other. Each kind is its own nation¡¯s cultural treasure, containing rich cultural deposits. Now, the prevailing of archaistic building rightly belongs to an active performance to permanently inherit national culture!
